Fragrance Terminology

 
  Aroma-Chology The study of the psychological effects of fragrance
  Absolute The most concentrated form of perfume material
  Aroma chemical Chemical forms of odors found in nature
  Aromatherapy The use of volatile plant oils, including essential oils, for psychological and physical well-being
  Attar Persian word for Perfume. The terms refers to an essential oil obtained by distillation
  Base Notes The underlying tones of a perfume. The scents that last the longest on your skin
  Dry down The final phase of a fragrance as it developes on your skin
  Essential Oil Fragrant extracts taken directly from flowers, leaves, roots, fruits, etc.
  Fixative A perfume ingredient that prolongs the life of the fragrance. Also slows the evaporation rate of perfumes
  Incense The original form of fragrance. Fragrant gums, resins and herbs in various forms that are burned to create fragrance
  Limbic System The area of the brain that receives and interprets the fragrance impression fro the olfactory nerves. The limbic system is the center of our emotions, creativity, sexuality and memory
  Mid Notes Also called heart notes, these are the fragrances that define the perfume as floral, fruit, musk, etc.
  Note The olfactory impression of a single smell
  Olfactory Relating to the sense of smell
  Top Notes The first impression of the fragrance after it has been applied to the skin

  Fragrance Classification The family that the fragrance belongs to - musk, floral, fruit, oriental, earthy or spicy
  Musk Usually a base note and used as a fixative. Musks add depth to fragrances
  Floral Fragrances created with a combincation of flower/floral notes. Can be sweet and soft, or pungent and heady
  Fruit Fragrance notes of full, ripe fruits such as blackberry, cherry and vanilla. Fun, light, summer and spring fragrances
  Oriental Sophisticated and mysterious, these fragrances blend exotic flowers and herbs and have a strong erotic appeal
  Earthy Solid, grounded fragrances. Includes patchouly and myrrh
  Spicy Pungent and strong, these fragrances include cinnamon and cloves, ginger and lavender. Fiery and bold
